Frequently Asked Questions:
A smart meter is an electronic device abled to record consumption in all four quadrants of the spectrum. Active and Re-Active Power, both import and export. The meter can be used in both Pre-Payment and Post-Payment modes. It has the ability to be monitored and controlled remotely and will provide an alarm if tampered with. Communication is done via time and date stamped, GPRS.
The biggest advantage of a pre-paid meter is that it enables you to budget for your electricity usage, similar to your budget for airtime or data. Historically it is challenging for the Utilities to read your meter, with human error having a huge impact on the accuracy of your bill. This can result in estimated accounts or huge un-expected bills. With the ability to be read remotely, the Smart Meter enable the customer to not only budget for his usage, but similarly plan when he would run appliances, in particular Hot Water Cylinders during times when his electricity tariff might be cheaper.
Smart meters provide several benefits to both consumers and utilities:
- Accurate billing
- Proper budget planning
- Improved energy efficiency
- Monitor energy usage in real-time
- Tamper alarms for the Utilities.
A smart meter can collect a variety of data, including but not limited to:
- The amount of energy used
- The time of day when energy is used
- The length of time energy is used
- The rate of energy use
- The type of energy used
